Every Muslim knows that sincerity is the core factor for one’s actions to be accepted. Sincerity means being honest and straightforward without any pretense or deceit. The first deed a Muslim must do to make good his/her Islam is to purify his/her intentions in worship and religious deeds. We should act sincerely for the sake of Allah and dedicate our deeds to no other. Right intention, which is sincerity, is the foundation of everything else we do in Islam.Every act of worship, charity, or any good deed will be judged by the intention behind it. Allah knows the true and secret inner-motives of all deeds that we do, and these motives will be made known on the Day of Resurrection. So the question is how one should go about being sincere? Here are some tips on how to be sincere to Allah the Almighty.
Improve your private life. Imam Al-Ghazali said, “The first stage of sincerity is that your private and public state should be the same.”
Ask Allah for sincerity. The Prophet ﷺ would often say, “Oh Allah I seek refuge in associating partners with you knowingly, and I seek your forgiveness if I did so unknowingly”.
Hide your good deeds. “If you disclose your Sadaqat (almsgiving), it is well: but if you conceal them and give them to the poor, that is better for you. (Allah) will expiate you some of your sins.”(Quran 2:271)
Avoid boastfulness. Belittling our good deeds will lead to sincerity. Never consider your good deeds to be great, rather understand such actions are solely due to Allah’s favour.Ask Allah to preserve your good deeds and never be proud of your righteous actions. “So do not claim yourselves to be pure; He is most knowing of who fears Him.”(Quran 53:32 )
Stay away from Praise. We should always strive to be loved by people, but we should never be boastful. Our rank in this dunya doesn’t elevate our ranks in the eyes of Allah. “And they were not commanded except with this: that they should worship Allah, being completely sincere in the Din.”[Al-Qur’an 98:5]
