You may know many different ways to reduce kidney disease or keep them away but it's essential to know the important ones. Dr. Sudeep Singh Sachdev, Senior Consultant Nephrology at Narayana Superspeciality Hospital, Gurugram shared important details on the tips to keep your kidneys healthy.

Drink plenty of water. At least 10 to 12 glasses. Especially warm water.

Once

Maintain a salt-restricted diet or keep a low sodium diet. Try to keep your salt intake less than 5 grams a day.

Once

Maintain appropriate body weight. Target a BMI of less than 24 (Especially for Indians)

Once

Monitor your sugar levels. Target an HbA1c of less than 6.0. Fasting blood sugar level of less than 100. Postprandial or two hours post-meal blood sugar levels of less than 200.

Once

Monitor your blood pressures and keep them under control. Target blood pressures would be less than 120 by 80.

Once

Get your kidney function tests, urine analysis, and imaging investigations of the kidney which includes an ultrasound KUB done regularly.

Once

Quit smoking.

Once

Maintain an active and balanced lifestyle. Do a moderate exercise of around 45 minutes per day 5 out of 7 days in a week.

Once

Do not follow any sedentary lifestyle. Take a stroll after having your lunch.

Once

Avoid the unnecessary use of any painkillers or any alternative medications.
